Offered Dec. 6, at Heritage Auctions in Dallas; brash, distinctive and famous cover art from one of Hip Hop’s most famous records; expected to bring $10,000+

DALLAS The original artwork from Snoop Dogg’s groundbreaking 1993 original albumDoggystyle, by Joe Cool, 1993 undoubtedly one of the most important albums in the history of hip-hop is expected to bring more than $10,000 when it crosses the block for the very first time on Dec. 6 at Heritage Auctions as part of the company’s Entertainment & Music Auction.

“This is a true treasure of Hip Hop and American Pop Culture,” said Dean Harmeyer, Consignment Director at Heritage Auctions. “Snoop’s debutDoggystyleimmediately established him as an A-List artist and one of the most important figures in popular music over the last two decades.”

The album has sold more than five million copies to date and, upon release in November 1993,it set a new record for the biggest US album debut ever with over 800,000 copies sold in its first week alone

Doggystyleis also remembered for its brash, distinctive cover art, featuring a comic rendering of Snoop Dogg as a canine. The artwork was done by artist Joe Cool (aka Darryl Daniels), from a concept by the album’s producer, Dr. Dre. The airbrushing of the cover was added by artist Christopher Burch, in collaboration with Joe Coo. This iconic piece of hip-hop history was obtained by the consignor directly from Burch.

“Taking a cue from thePeanutscomic strip, the canine Snoop Dogg is atop a doghouse, similar to where Snoopy often appeared inPeanuts,” said Harmeyer, “and was meant as a humorous subversion of the iconic Charles Schulz character.”
