Jon M. Chu, the filmmaker for “Crazy Rich Asians,” is set to direct for Warner Bros film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical In the Heights.
Miranda will be producing the movie, along with Anthony Bregman, Mara Jacobs, and Scott Sanders.
In May, Warner Brothers had picked up the rights to the musical after it was released by The Weinstein Co.
There was buzz yesterday (Nov. 5) that Rita Moreno would be joining the cast. But a representative of the actress has confirmed that she won’t be joining the film. The production has expressed their interest in the EGOT winner for the role of Abuela Claudia.
Anthony Ramos, who appeared in the hit movie “A Star is Born” and was in the original Broadway cast of Miranda’s Hamilton, is set to play Usnavi. Usnavi is the bogeda owner at the center of the action. Ramos also played the character Usnavi in the Kennedy Center Production.
The film is set in New York’s Washington Heights, and the story centered on a bodega owner. There’s also a college student, a taxi driver, a beauty salon owner, and the grandmother. All the characters are trying to live better lives as gentrification begins to take hold of the neighborhood. The bodega owner now is having mix thoughts as he considers shutting down his store and retiring in the Dominican Republic.
The movie will also be featuring a screenplay by original book writer Quiara Alegría Hudes.
The film is slated to hit theatres June 2020.
