International and Entertainment have joined to launch a hi-res streaming service, Mora Qualitas. The service is expected to cost 2,000 yen a month, roughly $20. Mora Qualitas is the first hi-def streaming service introduced in Japan.

Subscribers will have access to a large music catalog managed by Sony Music and delivered at 24-bit streaming quality. Tidal and Deezer have both been exploring high end tiers in their services.

The largest difficulty such a service may face is its navigation of a particular danger. On the one hand, its success hinges on the market for such a niche service in Japan. On the other, if it proves successful enough that success may rouse a challenge from a larger competitor such as Apple Music or Spotify. The full anticipated outcome has yet to be seen.
