iHeartMedia Chicago and 107.5 WGCI, Chicago’s No.1 Station for Hip-Hop & R&B, announced a year-long partnership with Scott Joplin Elementary School, a school located in the heart of Chicago’s South Side, to develop a music program for its students. Studies show that students engaged in music programs outperform their peers on every indicator: grade-point average, graduation rate, ACT scores, attendance and discipline referrals.
Scott Joplin Elementary is named after the renowned composer and pianist who was dubbed, “the king of ragtime.” This partnership will help Joplin develop a structured music program that will honor the school’s legacy and live up to its name. Matt Scarano, Region President for iHeartMedia Chicago, along with other iHeartMedia executives pledged support after recently visiting the school and learning more about the students’ pressing needs for music development.
As part of the partnership, 107.5 WGCI will donate $1 of each ticket sale from the station’s signature annual concerts – Summer Jam and Big Jam. In addition, 107.5 WGCI recently launched a merchandise store with 100% of the net proceeds going to Scott Joplin Elementary School’s music program. Merchandise items include branded hats, T-shirts and other apparel.
“The partnership underscores our commitment to providing the necessary resources to address the
needs of our local communities,” said Matt Scarano. “The students at Joplin Elementary School
represent the future of the Chicago community. Providing them with music learning resources will
ensure them a brighter future.”
“I am extremely excited about the partnership with iHeartMedia Chicago and 107.5 WGCI,” said
Alene Mason, Principal of Scott Joplin Elementary School. “This partnership will provide our
students with a state-of-the-art music program, enabling them to learn and explore the global
impact of music and the arts.”
