10. Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Fitzgerald had a horrific childhood. She was abused by her stepfather, became homeless and had ties to the Mafia. All before gaining the nickname the “Queen of Jazz”.
After tough beginnings, they put her in a reform school for girls. The segregated school was no break from cruelty, as she and other African Americans were beaten regularly.
