With all due respect to Tyler Perry and his amazing achievements in proving that lying Hollywood big wigs are mere marketing racists, it’s hard for me to believe that TBS has given the green light for another 26 episodes of House of Payne, a show that is about as funny as a cancer patient getting radiation treatment. Studies indicated that that the show regularly draws 2 million-plus viewers a week which to me indicates that black church people really are gullible. No wonder so many black ministers are able to rip them off for their last dollar.
Still one must give Perry credit for being one helluva savvy businessman. He turned the syndication model upside down by paying for 10 pilot episodes out of his own pocket… he used his clout to give them for free to networks in 2006 to prove the show’s worth. Then he waited for the offers to come in and he sold the first 100 to TBS upfront. So instead of airing 22 episodes a year for four or five years, he taped an incredible 100 episodes in less than a year (in all honesty, with the show’s limitations in the humor dept. I do not have a hard time believing that). TBS is not stupid either, they are airing all 100 shows in a year’s time, two a week. Critics haven’t been too kind but the show is successful for what TBS is looking for.
