INDUSTRY EXCLUSIVE: What’s Next for Tom Joyner Morning Show?

Over the past several weeks The Tom Joyner Morning Show has seen quite a bit of controversy.  We know many fans of the show want to know what they can expect in the near future and we’re hear to tell you how the industry works and what’s next. Here are some of the things you may or may not know about the show. Let me add, if you went on the last Fantastic Voyage cruise then you know that Tom, Sybil and J are HILARIOUS (when off the air) if it wasn’t for advertisers and being on in mornings on commercial radio the show would be even better. Would Tom consider doing SiriusXM radio show? Time will tell but it’s certainly the path that several other former commercial radio jocks have chosen to get away from all the stipulations and corporate politics.  In an upcoming exclusive interview with Radio Facts, Tom Joyner informed us that he has every intention of continuing to do radio.

Tom Joyner has over 8 Million Listeners

That in itself means he has a stronghold on a HUGE African American audience many who whom are very loyal to him and have been listening to the TJMS for 21 years. Please click “Next” above or below to see next segment.

  1. Kevin,

Thank you for the perspective of Tom Joyner’s impact on radio. Yes he is a “classically” trained (from college radio) personality. His activism throughout the years is unparalleled however most of Tom’s support today is from those that are transitioning away from “music” radio, urban radio formats, and listening to news and NPR formats. And the youth today know of radio but don’t really listen to radio like Baby Boomers because of the abundance of other “music” and information sources. I was blessed to hear and remember Tom when he a was local personality in Chicago. that’s what I remember most. I am happy for Tom’s success but I have never been a “FAN” of radio syndication. It seems that there no one else who has been prepared to step in for Tom and continue the legacy of good radio the TJMS created. Oh yeah, those years of syndication “killed” the chances for another radio personality arise. And one final thought Father Time has NEVER lost a battle.

      • kev ross, so you think the daily mail article is planted? but there were truths in it. TJMS has been cutting things: no more ‘it’s your world ‘ soap, no more miss dupree, no more myraJ. TJM did(stupidly IMO) sell more shares to radio1 so now TJ isnt in control of his own company.

we shall see come jan 2017 when POTUS Obama leaves is TJ does as well.

      • kev ross,
hmmmm i hope you were not swayed by TJMS TJ or radio1 in posting this.

  2. My station WJBT serving Northeast Florida was the third TJMS affliate (after Chicago and Dallas) we followed his lead and the little station that could grew… I understand the impact of syndication but we should not forget how his show grew black radio and had a positive impact on local communities… A lot has happened since the early 90’s one thing that has not changed is my respect for Mr. Joyner without him I could have spent the last 20+ years teaching school or working at Pier One imports… Thanks Tom

    • I have been a fan of Tom for Manny, Manny Manny years. When I was working and had to be at work by 5 am, I would punching and sneak back to my car to listen to the begging of the Tom Joyner’s morning show. Keep the good work up Tom I love and support u.

    • J Anthony Brown very funny guy Tom and J are good together alone with Sybal please don’t break up the team I listen each morning before going to work. Lets put the band back together.

  3. I will no longer be lisening to102.3, Russ Parr plays a lot of Hip Hop and Rap I don’t like that type of music. I like Tom Joyners morning show as is, I’m old school and that’s my type of music he plays. Cathy Hughes needs to rethink her move because she’s going to lose a lot of loyal fans, if she makes him move to 1450 am. I’m glad she brought Donnie Simpson back, but this would be a terrible decision on her part and could cost her Radio One a lot of money.

  4. Who says things needs to get younger or have a younger perspective anyway? There is enough “young” radio outlets to go around! Besides, I enjoy having my old ear entertained by the TJMS every morning.

    • i HEARD THE SAME THING, ( OUT OF DONNIE SIMPSON MOUTH ) SHE IS PUTTING HIM ON WOL 1450 AM RADIO , KATHY HUGE ALWAYS HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH TOM JOYNER , SHE TRIED TO TAKE HIM OFF THE AIR 2 YEARS AGO AND TURN 102.3 INTO A XM FORMAT WITH NO D J’S ON THE STATION, IT DID NOT WORK AND IF SHE THINKS THIS WILL WORK THE LADY IS TOTALLY CLUELESS

      • if cathy hughes and tom joyner do not liek one another why do business?
why did radio one buy reach media which is TJ’s radio show and website?

why did TJ sell to Cathy Hughes if he doesnt like her ?

      • you have to love it when people who have no clue want to comment. While I think Radio One makes bad decisions regularly, your assessment of a Tom Takeover during a weekend was and attempt to let people know that tom was still there. Check the morning numbers over the last two years and you will find the answer that you are lookin for. you can’t kick off the day with a morning show that doesn’t evev crack the top ten. Maybe folks should have listened more?

  5. I have listened to the Tom Joyner Morning Show since I moved here to Alabama.. I love the music, I like his commentating, love the way he enter acts with callers and listeners.. He’s a natural!!! The owners should try everything they can to keep the Legacy, Laughter, Commentating and most if all “their knack for Relating to all ages and races, making us laugh during good times and bad”. Keeping us informed, being our unseen FRIEND!! He is more to us then just a RADIO Personality, He’s our FRIEND!!! Seen and Unseen!!!!

  6. I know one thing this is one of the most biggest show on black radio. And I have been a listener for over twenty year and there’s know other morning show that keep there listener inform like this show. My grandmother always said every time something good come along to help our people someone is always trying to find away to brake that up. The show has three people who take pride in there work and without one of them the show will not be the same so with that bring said I do hope that J Anthony Brown will return he is the anchor of this show fun man an is love just like Tom and Sibil is

  7. Tom Joyner is loved all over this industry, always informative in every aspect, has been kicked out of a lotta places (Chicago) more than once, and turned it all around for the betterment of being knowledgeable of it all. Age is the factor here for kicking out of what he loves so much, helping people. How appalling as an excuse for it all.

Tom Joyner, what a class act, I am a senior as well, and have followed Tom Joyner forever, and will continue to do so.

What a pleasure to finally meet you Tom Joyner, face to face, you are and will continue to be loved (Harbor View, and after party.

I never missed a 5am wake up without my Tom Joyner wake up (5am to 9am) Chicago time.

Love my Tom Joyner morning show (Sybil and Jay)

  8. Love J. Anthony Brown and would hate to see him go. If Tom walks after his contract is up, what will become of the family reunion?
