SEN. VINCENT HUGHES, RADIO ONE PHILADELPHIA GUN DRIVE TOPS 425 GUNS in 5-HOURS.

Philadelphia, PA – On Saturday, June 28, 2008, Radio One Philadelphia stations: WPHI, WRNB, AND WPPZ, along with State Senator Vincent Hughes, Congressman Chaka Fattah, Councilwomen Blondell Reynolds Brown Brown’s Family Shoprite, Forman Mills and Pepsi showed their commitment to stopping the rash of senseless violence in Philadelphia with the Goods for Guns Program. The program solicited for community members with unneeded, unwanted and possibly illegal guns to turn the guns in—no questions asked—in exchange for a $50 gift from Brown’s Family Shoprite and a $50 gift card from Forman Mills for each gun, while supplies lasted. Goods for Guns took place from 10a-3p at Tustin Playground 5901 W. Columbia Ave. WRNB’s DC Todd, WPPZ’s Dezzie; and WPHI on-air personality: Laiya, broadcasted live from the park, representing their respective stations. According to Elroy Smith, Operations Manager of the Radio One Philadelphia, “This is a loud statement that the city of Philadelphia is making by this overwhelming response. The citizens are tired of the senseless violence and they are contributing by helping Radio One Philadelphia to get these weapons off the streets. We had to turn people away!”

The citizens of Philadelphia answered the call. Over 425 guns were collected in 5-hours. Philadelphia police received a variety of assault guns including an Uzi and machine gun.

Over $41,000 in gift cards of food and clothing were given away in exchange for the guns; courtesy of Brown’s Family Shoprite and Foreman Mills
