I have not read an EBONY or a JET magazine since the early 80′s. Both magazines would literally put me to sleep. Even THEN both magazines were boring and dated. All the articles in EBONY talked about soul food, some sister who lost 100 pounds and found a man and consistent coverage of the EBONY Fashion Fair in different cities (who cared) and it was page after page of old politicians, dated news and tired music charts (yawn)… Jet used to actually depress me as a teenager (laugh) with nothing but coverage of black on black crimes and racism, pictures of people in caskets and KKK stories. BUT WHAT’S THIS…
Somebody over at Ebony FINALLY rose from the dead and hired some young fresh talent forcing the deceased magazine to get off life support and prosthetic publishing limbs. Topics this month sound more like XXL than Ebony… Gunned Down, Paying for Sex, Baby Mama Drama and they really go the extra mile by featuring a shirtless Chris Brown on the cover instead of some old dated black movie star that hasn’t worked in the last two years. The one problem black owned business have ALWAYS had is a refusal to let a new generation take the reigns and to keep the perspective fresh. We are loyal, at times foolishly, to what USED to work to the point that it not only DOESN’T work anymore but to the point that it’s a joke.
We’ll see what the outcome is but it’s going to take a least a year of this to make me want to pick up another issue after a 25 year hiatus.
