Washington Post slates a new black web magazine

With a project that’s been called the African-American version of Slate, The Washington Post yesterday started an online magazine called The Root. The web site, which will feature news, genealogy information and views from prominent black writers, is a collaboration between Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Post chief Donald Graham. Gates, who is the editor in chief of The Root, is also the director of the W.E.B Du Bois Institute for African American Research at Harvard. Gates told The Associated Press he hopes the new magazine will provide a forum similar to a black barbershop or beauty parlor, where the issues of the day can be discussed. The focus on genealogy, including DNA testing and help in researching family trees, will be a big part of the magazine, which was developed with the help of Jacob Weisberg, editor of Slate, another online magazine. Former New York Times reporter Lynette Clemetson is the managing editor and contributors include author and New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell and John H. McWhorter of the Manhattan Institute.
