Obesity awareness is especially timely since First Lady Michelle Obama has made healthy living her personal cause. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If the problem isn’t solved, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.
The YMCA of Philadelphia and Vicinity is focused on improving the health of the community by using policy and environmental changes that create sustainable opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity. In partnership with the City of Philadelphia‘s Health Department, several universities, insurance providers, and Community Based Organizations the YMCA of Philadelphia and Vicinity are working to create a community where all are given an equal opportunity for active living and health eating.
